Genetics

Is Cherry Gelato indica or sativa? Its genetics and family tree

Cherry Gelato is a hybrid that Leafly and AllBud list as 60% sativa, bred from Black Cherry Funk and Acai Berry Gelato by a breeder Leafly calls unknown.1,2 Leafly gives Black Cherry Gelato the same two parents, while Lemon Cherry Gelato, far more common in state lab records, comes from a different branch of the Gelato family.3,4,5,6

Cherry Gelato, Black Cherry Gelato and Lemon Cherry Gelato

Three strains share most of a name. Cherry Gelato and Black Cherry Gelato are listed with the same two parents but on separate pages with different descriptions; Lemon Cherry Gelato is a different strain with a different origin.1,3,4 Weedmaps does not separate the first two: its address for Cherry Gelato opens its Black Cherry Gelato page.11

The two parents

Acai Berry Gelato, also sold as Acai Gelato, is a sativa-dominant cross of Thin Mint Cookies and Sunset Sherbet from Sherbinski, described by Leafly as a deep purple plant dripping with trichomes, with as much as 32% THC.7 It is one of the six numbered Gelato phenotypes that Sherbinski counts as official, #49, and his company lists it for its berry notes.15,16 Leafly names two children: Black Cherry Gelato and Cherry Gelato.7

Black Cherry Funk is listed by SeedFinder as a clone-only, evenly balanced cross of DJ Short’s Blueberry and Black Cherry Soda, with a creamy flavor of blueberry, sweet pine and licorice.8 Leafly says Black Cherry Soda is named for its fruity, soda-like taste and unusually dark purple color, and that DJ Short developed Blueberry in the late 1970s.17,18

How sativa is it?

Leafly and AllBud both give a split of 60% sativa and 40% indica, yet Leafly rates the effects mostly calming and lists relaxed first.1,2 The parents pull in different directions: Leafly calls Acai Berry Gelato sativa-dominant, with talkative, uplifted and creative as its top effects, while SeedFinder describes Black Cherry Funk as evenly balanced, lifting first and then relaxing the body.7,8

Same parents as Black Cherry Gelato?

On paper, yes. Leafly lists Cherry Gelato as Black Cherry Funk × Acai Berry Gelato and Black Cherry Gelato as Acai × Black Cherry Funk; Weedmaps traces Black Cherry Gelato to Black Cherry Funk and the Acai Gelato cut; and Leafly’s Acai Berry Gelato page names both as its children.1,3,7,12 Barney’s Farm sells a third name for the pairing as seed: SeedFinder lists its Black Cherry Gushers as Acai × Black Cherry Funk.19

The descriptions differ. Leafly gives Cherry Gelato 14% THC and berry, violet and sweet flavors, and Black Cherry Gelato 22% THC with apricot, pear and berry; AllBud calls Cherry Gelato 60% sativa, while Weedmaps calls Black Cherry Gelato an indica. None of these sources says whether the two names began as different plants from the same cross or as one plant sold under two names.1,2,3,12

What our lab data adds

In state lab records the name mostly belongs to other strains. Our strict matching found only five flower tests of plain Cherry Gelato, against 1,034 results across all product types (758 of them flower) sold under near-miss names.6 The largest group is "Lemon Cherry Gelato" (216 results), and 11 of the 12 most common near-miss names are Lemon Cherry Gelato labels, 578 results between them.6 "White Cherry Gelato" (20) is another; Leafly lists it as Gelato × White Cherry OG.6,20 Black Cherry Gelato is counted as its own strain, with 102 tests.6

Cherry MAC is the only offspring we could verify. Most strains named “… Cherry Gelato” are not its offspring: Leafly lists Strawberry Cherry Gelato and Blue Cherry Gelato as Lemon Cherry Gelato crosses and White Cherry Gelato as Gelato × White Cherry OG.20,21,22
